Bruce-Alan Barnard, JD, LLM
Bruce is a retired FLETC Senior Legal Instructor who has provided legal training to over 30,000 law enforcement officers. Bruce-Alan received a B.S. in Adult Education with High Honors from Southern Illinois University and a law degree (J.D.) from the University of Florida. He also holds a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) degree from Auburn University and a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree from the University of Alabama. Bruce has been a member of the Florida Bar for over 30 years.
Upon graduating from high school, Bruce joined the United States Navy, serving for ten years and conducting covert electronic surveillance on various fast-attack submarines in both the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets. Bruce was certified as an instructor and was designated “Master Training Specialist” during a tour as an instructor at the Naval Submarine School. He was honorably discharged to attend law school.
After completing law school, Bruce was commissioned as a JAG and served ten years in the United States Air Force. In addition to prosecuting cases, he was certified as a USAF Instructor by AETC and taught at the US Air Force Judge Advocate General’s School. Bruce was also a Special United States Attorney prosecuting cases in the Middle District of Alabama. He retired from the Air Force with the permanent rank of Major in 2007 and accepted a position as a Senior Legal Instructor at FLETC in Glynco, Georgia.
As an award-winning FLETC-certified Senior Legal Instructor, Bruce was responsible for curriculum development and served as the subject-matter expert in Search and Seizure Law and Electronic Surveillance Law. Bruce retired from FLETC in January 2018.
Upon retiring from FLETC, Bruce founded a private company, now known as LEO LAW, which provides training in the legal aspects of law enforcement to federal, tribal, state, and local law enforcement officers nationwide. Bruce has been an adjunct professor at numerous universities and colleges, including the University of Maryland, Auburn University, Troy University, and Hawaii Pacific University.
Bruce brings his extensive knowledge of federal constitutional and criminal law, as well as his curriculum development acumen, to FLORIDA LEO LLC. Bruce is responsible for all of the federal and non-Florida-specific learning objectives in the FLORIDA LEO courses.
Brian A. Iten, JD
Brian Iten is a police agency legal advisor for a west-central Florida law enforcement agency of over 650 sworn officers. Brian received a B.A. Magna Cum Laude from the University of South Florida and a law degree (J.D.) from Florida State University. Brian has been a member of the Florida Bar for nearly 30 years.
Since March 2019, he has provided classroom instruction – on a part-time basis – to state and local police officers at the National Computer Forensic Institute in Hoover, Alabama. Brian served as a Circuit Court Judge for over 3 years in Florida’s 12th Judicial Circuit, where he presided over a multitude of bench and jury trials, in both the felony and civil divisions. For the 21 years preceding his appointment to the bench, Brian was a state prosecutor in Manatee County, Florida. During his tenure as a prosecuting attorney, Brian regularly lectured to local police agencies, with a primary focus on search and seizure, and taught at seminars sponsored by the Institute of Police Technology and Management, the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance, the Florida Council Against Sexual Violence, and the Florida Prosecuting Attorneys Association. He has tried over 100 criminal cases, including sexual battery, armed robbery, and homicide. He has also served as an adjunct instructor at both the State College of Florida and Manatee Technical College’s Law Enforcement Academy.
Brian brings his extensive knowledge of Florida constitutional and criminal law to FLORIDA LEO LLC. Brian is responsible for the Florida-specific learning objectives in the FLORIDA LEO courses.
